Our Prayer Covenant

Being encouraged by Jonathan Edward's 'A Humble Attempt' and the present-day stirrings of the Holy Spirit across our State, this petition was presented to a group of 72 ministers on April 21, 2005 in Manchester, New Hampshire. [Adapted from a petition made by John Sutcliff in 1784 to the Northampton Baptist Association, England.]

"Upon a motion being made to ministers representing New Hampshire Churches and Ministries assembled in Manchester, New Hampshire, concerning meeting for prayer, to earnestly implore God for a revival of our churches, and the general cause of our Redeemer, and for that end to wrestle with God for the effusion of His Holy Spirit, which alone can produce that blessed effect, it was unanimously RESOLVED, to recommend to all of our churches and congregations to:

Pray for revival with other leaders and believers in our respective communities that the Holy Spirit may be poured down on our churches, that sinners may be converted, the saints edified, the interest of Christianity revived, and the Name of God glorified.

At the same time, may we not confine our requests to our own churches, or to our immediate connections; let the whole interest of the Redeemer be affectionately remembered, and the spread of the Gospel to the most distant parts of the habitable globe be the object of our most fervent requests. We shall rejoice if any other Christian societies or other denominations will unite with us, and do now invite them most cordially to join heart and hand in the attempt.

Who can tell what the consequences of such an united effort in prayer may be?! Let us plead with God the many gracious promises of His Word, which relate to the future success of His Gospel. He has said 'I will yet for this be enquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them, I will increase them with men like a flock (Ezek 36:37).'

Surely we have love enough for the Church to set apart time in prayer together to seek her welfare."
