A House of Prayer for All Nations!

gate James records that Elijah was like us.

"...and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit (Jam 5:17-19)."

He didn't pray in Ahab's court: there he exercised authority and called into being that which did not yet exist. He prayed in Gilead on the other side of the Jordan River. Gilead was full of shepherds and sheep. This is where the Spirit burdened him with this prayer. Elijah discovered that God had already promised that He would close the heavens if Israel wandered from the covenant:

"The LORD will change the rain of your land to powder and dust; from the
heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed (Deu 28:24)"

Elijah activated this promise and through his prayers and declaration and helped turned a nation back to God. He was a "voice crying in the wilderness to prepare the way of the Lord." Elisha had a double portion of this same spirit. Jesus referred to John the Baptist as an "Elijah" in His day.

This "spirit of Elijah" is fervent; it is powerful and effective in bringing answers. It is the early spirit of Dartmouth College - a little closer to home - as its motto continues to be: "A voice crying in the widerness..." And today, there are more Christians at the college than at any time in its history! May we all drink from this same cup knowing that:

"The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much!"
